About Can I Afford

Can I Afford is a free financial calculator tool built to answer the one question people ask themselves before every major life purchase: can I actually afford this? We built it because most financial tools are either too complicated, hidden behind email walls, or designed to sell you something. Ours is none of those things.

Every calculator on this site is free, works instantly, requires no account or email address, and is built on the same financial rules that advisors and lenders use โ€” the 28% housing rule, the 20/4/10 car rule, the 30% rent rule, and the 10โ€“15% wedding guideline. We also include reverse calculations, so you can work backwards from your budget to find what you can realistically afford.

Why We Built This

The idea started from a simple frustration: when you're standing at a car dealership, or looking at apartments online, or trying to figure out if you can afford to move out โ€” you need a quick, honest number. Not a sign-up form. Not a sales pitch from a lender. Just: based on my income and expenses, can I afford this?

We built Can I Afford to be that tool. Simple enough to use in two minutes, thorough enough to actually trust.

Honest answers

We tell you when something is out of your budget โ€” even if it's not what you want to hear.

No hidden agenda

We don't sell leads to lenders or earn commissions. The calculators exist to help you, not sell to you.

Privacy first

No email required. No account needed. Your financial data never leaves your browser.

Built on real rules

Every calculation uses established financial guidelines, not made-up metrics.

About the Creator

Can I Afford was created by Kelon Nyanguno, a developer and personal finance enthusiast who got tired of seeing friends make major financial decisions without a clear picture of whether they could actually afford them. He built the first version of this tool for himself, then put it online when others found it useful.

Kelon is based in Nairobi and has a background in software development and a deep interest in financial literacy โ€” particularly making financial knowledge accessible to people who weren't taught this stuff in school.

The site is maintained and updated regularly. If a calculation seems off, or if you have a suggestion for a new calculator, please reach out.

A Note on Financial Advice

The calculators on this site are tools for financial awareness, not professional financial advice. They give you a starting point based on widely used rules of thumb. Your specific situation โ€” local cost of living, existing debt, job stability, family situation โ€” matters enormously. For major decisions like buying a home, we always recommend also speaking with a licensed financial advisor or mortgage professional.

That said, knowing the numbers is the first step. That's what we're here for.
